Calpe – Climbing the Peñon de Ifach

Alicante is the perfect destination for holidays of any length. The city not only offers the perfect weather, the beach and the Mediterranean sea, but also lots of adventure and sports activities.

If you feel like doing something different while on vacation in Alicante, we suggest a visit to Calpe.

Calpe is a little village located just 1,30h away from Alicante by bus, featuring charming beaches and the most symbolic natural park of Costa Blanca.

In the park, known as Peñoñ de Ifach, you can find a 332m hight rock, with fantastic panoramic views seen from its top. What´s more, it is perfectly accessible to visitors and free of charge!

The bus station of Alicante is just 10 min walking from the Hotel Alamo, from where the bus will take you straight to Calpe for around 15 euros round trip.

Upon arrival you can reach the park  by walking along the promenade and enjoying the view of the rock up ahead.  Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, shoes suitable for medium difficulty hiking, stay hydrated and bring sun block. The entire hike should take you about 2,30 hours, so better take some snacks with you to enjoy on the top while you take in the views.

The route is easy to follow and has two parts – before the tunnel, excavated in the rock, it is easy and can be done by families with kids. After the tunnel, however, the difficulty increases significantly and you need to be cautious! On the way you will find ropes to help with the climb and lots of other adventurers.

About half-way up you will find that the route has two ways you can choose from – to the Carabineros viewpoint or the top. The viewpoint consists of a small space with incredible coast sights, where they say that on cloudless days, you can even see Ibiza.

Many choose to climb to the very top, which offers unforgettable views that are well worth the effort. The hikers aren´t the only ones you will meet there – it´s inhabited by ¨wild cats¨. The smart creatures are fed by friendly travelers, who bring all kinds of food with them to have a picnic on the rocks. In return, the cats pose for lots of photos.

The way down is along the same route, but be careful not to drift off – the seagulls won´t be too happy if you disturb one of their nests.

After the hike you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee on the promenade before heading back to Alicante.

So if you want to add some adventure to your holidays, be sure to visit Calpe.

And here a picture of the Alamo team at the top of the Peñon rock:
