On Thursday April 16 Alicante celebrates the popular pilgrimage of Santa Faz.
The Santa Faz pilgrimage, also known as “La Peregrina”, is a Catholic pilgrimage that is over five centuries old, and which takes place in Alicante the second Thursday after the Holy Week (Easter Thursday). More than 300,000 pilgrims from different cities get together to make their way to the monastery of Santa Faz.
Pilgrims gather at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari at 7AM, located 5 minutes away from the Hotel Alamo. From there they walk five miles to reach the monastery of Santa Faz, where the relic of the Holy Face of Christ is venerated. The canvas have the image of the “face” of Christ depicted on them, which according to tradition is what Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus on his road to Calvary.
The typical attire of the pilgrims is composed of a black blouse, sandals, a scarf around their necks with the colors of the city (white and blue), canes with rosemary at the tip (which are given out at the cathedral one hour before the departure), caps or hats for sun protection, a canteen of water for the road and a backpack with typical Easter foods, such as raw beans, Spanish omelette, rabbit with tomatos, wine, anise and the wine of Fondillón.
The pilgrims are accompanied by numerous civil, military and ecclesiastical authorities.
Typical is the “paraeta” where donuts and sweet wine liquor are enjoyed. Around the monastery many street stalls are installed, in which pilgrims usually buy some crafts.
During the course of the pilgrimage a traditional ‘Viacrucis’ is done, consisting of a thirteen station sandstone with a ceramic tile where the scenes of the Passion are represented.
Some young people celebrate another kind of pilgrimage, walking with the rest of pilgrims from the beginning but taking a detour before reaching the monastery that takes them to the beach of San Juan. There they end the pilgrimage with a “botellon” in the beach and enjoy the sun and the sea after walking a long way.
Hotel Alamo welcomes hundreds of pilgrims from different parts of Spain and we encourage you to participate this year, especially if you haven´t done it before.
